What are UTM parameters?

UTM parameters are small pieces of information added to a URL. Analytics platforms can use them to identify the campaign details associated with a visit. They are useful when you share links across newsletters, social posts, ads, partnerships, and other channels.

When should you use them?

Use campaign tags when you need to distinguish traffic sources that may otherwise be grouped together. For example, you might tag the same landing page differently for a newsletter, a paid social campaign, and a partner mention. Avoid adding tags to ordinary internal links on your own website, because doing so can interfere with attribution in some analytics setups.

Good naming habits

  • Choose one spelling for each channel and reuse it.
  • Prefer clear names over internal abbreviations that your team may forget.
  • Use campaign names that are easy to understand months later.
  • Test the final link and confirm that the destination loads correctly.

UTM tags do not guarantee accurate measurement by themselves. Analytics configuration, consent settings, redirects, and privacy controls can all affect what is recorded.
